Burning oil refers to heating oil used in industrial and domestic heating systems. You may also see it being called:
Primarily employed by domestic households, burning oil is mainly used to produce heat but it can also generate light and power, whilst highly refined burning oil can also be used as jet fuel.
When storing burning oil at your home or industrial site, there are some important precautions you must take to ensure complete safety whilst ensuring you’re following all relevant laws and regulations.
These precaution include:
Both burning oil and diesel have similar properties in terms of heat combustion and can be mixed/used interchangeably in most boiler systems. Burning oil provides slightly more heat output due to the fact it’s slightly heavier and is a rebated fuel which makes it cost-effective for heat generation. Diesel is more versatile and can be used as road fuel whilst burning oil may only be used for heat generation.
When stored in the correct conditions, burning oil can be stored for up to 5 years meaning that an average off-grid home should consume the oil before it begins to degrade in quality. However, fuel must be stored in safe conditions to ensure that the degradation process is not accelerated.
The wholesale price of home heating oil changes throughout the year due to a range of factors including the time of year, crude oil supply and production, government policies and wider market conditions. At Beesley Fuels, we always offer competitive prices and our knowledgeable account managers can provide helpful tips to ensure that you always get a competitive price for your home heating oil.
You can reduce the consumption of your burning oil in several ways such as:
The government has introduced a ban on new oil burning heating systems which was initially set to come into effect by 2026 but it has now been delayed to 2035. This means that from 2035 all off-grid homes looking to upgrade their heating systems will need to look towards more sustainable options such as heat pumps. The government aims to have phased out 80% of heating oil systems in off-grid homes by 2035. The 2035 ban does not apply to homes that already have an oil heating system installed but rather homes that are looking to install a new heating system.
Homes that are looking to reduce their carbon emissions can also look at alternative fuels to be used in their existing heating systems. HVO fuel is a fully renewable fuel that will work in your existing heating system whilst reducing net emissions by up to 90%. HVO has been extensively tested and OFTEC have launched the Future Ready Fuel website and HVO campaign to secure policy support from the government to encourage more people to switch to the renewable fuel.
The government boiler upgrade scheme (BUS) aims to help off-grid homes switch to more sustainable heating systems by offering a grant of up to £7,500. This scheme is designed to encourage off-grid homes to switch to a cleaner heating system and help the government meet its 80% target.
