When looking for an HVO fuel supplier, there are a range of factors that you need to consider before making your decision. In this guide, we’re going to break down all of these considerations so that you can make the right choice.
For over 50 years, we’ve been trusted by businesses large and small to supply them with a wide range of fuels, including HVO fuel. If you would like to discuss your own HVO requirements with our fuel experts, call 0330 123 1144 today.
In this article, we’ll explain each consideration in more detail so that you know exactly what to look for when choosing an HVO supplier.
When considering which HVO supplier to choose, one of the first things you should check is that the supplier is approved under the Renewable Fuels Assurance Scheme (RFAS), an initiative managed by Zemo to verify claims regarding the GHG emission savings and the provenance of raw material feedstocks. If a supplier is not approved under RFAS, it may mean that Zemo is unable to verify the sustainability credentials of the product. This puts you at risk of using fuel that is of poor quality and that does not provide the environmental benefits claimed by the supplier.
The ISCC is an international initiative and certification system that tracks supply chains to support sustainable and climate-friendly development. ISCC certified HVO is fully traceable throughout its supply chain, including its feedstocks, refining process and distribution.
HVO suppliers whose product is not certified under the ISCC or an alternative voluntary scheme could be supplying HVO produced from harmful feedstocks such as palm oil or POME.
At Beesley Fuels, we provide full certification, traceability and transparency of our product through the ISCC to ensure that all our HVO is free from palm oil.
The price of HVO may vary depending on the supplier you purchase from, as well as several factors, including:
The wholesale price may be affected by a range of external factors, but some suppliers may be able to provide competitive prices throughout the year. For instance, at Beesley Fuels, we purchase our HVO in bulk when wholesale prices are low, meaning that we can insulate customers from severe and sudden price changes to provide competitive HVO fuel prices throughout the year. We also offer flexible pricing plans to businesses in the UK to suit the budget and schedule of our customers.
The amount of HVO you purchase may also affect prices amongst suppliers, while one supplier may provide a better price for a smaller quantity, another supplier may provide a better price when you purchase a larger quantity. Due to the long-term storage capabilities of HVO (of up to 10 years), we recommend buying in bulk to allow you to get the best HVO price per litre – this also means that you won’t have to worry about placing regular orders.
If you operate from a single site, choosing an HVO supplier with a depot nearby may help you receive a better price as a result of lower delivery costs. For organisations that operate multiple sites, a HVO supplier with a network of depots can help ensure lower HVO costs across sites.
Nobody wants a gap in their fuel supply to put a halt to their operations, which is why reliable fuel deliveries are crucial to the smooth running of your site. When your fuel tanks are running low, you need an HVO supplier that is going to deliver fuel quickly. Many suppliers source their HVO as they receive an order, meaning that they may not provide consistent delivery times or the amount of fuel that you require.
At Beesley Fuels, we store bulk fuel onsite and have strategically located depots across the UK, meaning we can supply as much HVO as required to any site within 24-48 hours as standard. If your tanks are running low, we provide same-day emergency fuel deliveries 365 days a year to ensure that your supply never runs out.
If you operate a large site (or multiple sites), you need an HVO supplier with the capabilities to meet the larger demand. An HVO supplier with bulk stock stored onsite will be able to make faster deliveries, offer better prices and be able to make the delivery in fewer trips. On the other hand, suppliers that do not have bulk stock onsite will have to source HVO before they can make a delivery, meaning that you will have to wait longer for your fuel. This could mean you pay a higher price due to the supplier having to source HVO from a third party.
A supplier with an extensive history in the fuel industry will be better equipped to handle the varying needs of fuel consumers in comparison to a supplier that has recently begun trading. Reputable suppliers will also have a larger customer base, so checking out their reviews on Google or Trustpilot will give you a good idea of what to expect based on previous customer experiences. Choosing a supplier with excellent customer service will give you complete peace of mind that your HVO supply is in safe hands. It’s important that you look for a reputable HVO supplier with a knowledgeable team that can answer all of your queries in a clear and easy-to-understand manner.
In our 50 years of experience in the fuel industry, we’ve seen a range of changes in the demands of our customers and have continuously improved our service and product library to ensure that we’re meeting their needs.
To use HVO fuel as a drop-in replacement for diesel, it must meet British Standard (BS) EN 15940 specifications. EN 15940 outlines the physical and chemical properties required for paraffinic diesel fuels, including density, viscosity, oxidation stability, cetane number and more. If a supplier cannot provide technical information that meets the EN 15940 specifications, they may be supplying HVO that could harm your fuel systems and engines. It could also mean that they are not supplying pure HVO100 and that they’re blending other fuels in their product for unsuspecting customers.
View our EN 15940 specifications for more information.
If an HVO supplier does not provide transparency in their own carbon reporting, how can you trust the sustainability claims of the HVO they supply?
Suppliers that are unable to provide full transparency with their carbon reporting may be overstating the impact of their sustainability efforts and, therefore, may also be overstating the sustainability claims of their HVO.
Look for a supplier who reports their carbon annually through independently verified third parties. We report our carbon each year in accordance with the ISO 14064 framework, an internationally recognised standard for measuring, managing and reporting carbon emissions. All our sustainability claims are independently verified by the British Standards Institute (BSI), the UK’s national standard body. For more information, view our latest carbon assessment report.
