What is AdBlue?

AdBlue (also known as Diesel Exhaust Fluid or DEF) is an ‘after-treatment’ additive i.e. it’s injected to the exhaust fumes as they are being expelled from the vehicle.

Unlike the additives you may have purchased to add directly to your fuel tank when refuelling, AdBlue should never be directly added to your vehicle’s fuel tank, because doing so could harm your engine. Instead, it’s stored in a separate storage tank away from the fuel itself.

What is AdBlue made of?

Urea is the ‘active ingredient’ in AdBlue meaning it was originally manufactured from pig’s urine. More recently, a synthetic version is used, but it is the ammonia of the urea which provides the environmental benefits. The new synthetic version is a colourless, non-toxic and is not actually blue at all.

How does AdBlue reduce harmful emissions?

A process called Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) eliminates the harmful nitrogen oxides which are a major contributor to global warming. This is done by breaking them down into water and nitrogen, which are harmless to the environment, which therefore significantly reduces the environmental impact of your diesel engine‘s exhaust emissions.
